U18 AAA

Head Coach: Marcus Cheng

Marcus returns for his second season with the northstars. After a successful campaign with the u17aaa and provincial bronze Marcus is very excited to take the helm at u18aaa. Marcus brings a strong passion for the game and works to create a challenging environment that pushes kids out of their comfort zones. Encouraging hard work and goal setting, while embracing your team as a family. Marcus focuses on creating habits and relationships that make your team better players and better people

Previously Marcus was with the University of Alberta Golden Bears, serving as assistant coach and video coach under Head coach Ian Herbers. Winning a Canada West Championship and were National finalists. Marcus has also served as a coach at Alberta cup, prospects cup and Alberta winter games. Marcus previously coached with the NWCAA for four seasons leading teams to multiple EMHW and city finals. Marcus is a Certified Hockey Canada Skills Coach and is High Performance 1 certified.

Assistant Coach: Dan Giasson

Dan is excited for the opportunity to again work with Marcus, Bobby, and Jeff building on the success they had with the U17AAA team. Dan has experience at various AA and AAA levels having coached within the NWCAA and CNHA organizations. Dan has completed the CanSkate power skating Instructor program and is Hockey Alberta Development 1 certified. Dan was named Hockey Calgary’s Coach of the Year in 2017, has sat on numerous minor hockey committees, coached the First Shift program, and has held board positions with 2 hockey associations in Calgary. He has worked within the Team Alberta program as a Director of Operations, Evaluator and Prospects Cup coach. Dan brings lots of energy and passion for the game, he believes strongly in development through building positive relationships with his players helping them prepare for the next level.

Assistant Coach: Bobby Roy

Bobby returns to the Northstars after a successful first season with the U17AAA staff. Bobby grew up playing hockey in the PSA and Northstars associations and is extremely proud to be working with the U18AAA staff this season. Bobby has been selected to be a coach with Alberta prospects this year and also Coaches full time With Village Sports. Bobby will be entering his 8th season in coaching this year and has his Dev.1 certification. He brings a strong passion and work ethic to his teams and puts a big emphasis on goal setting and development with his players to create a winning culture.

Assistant Coach: Jeff Krichew

Coach Krichew is a returning Northstars coach where he was previously a Head Coach for U16AAA for two seasons and acted as the CNHA Flex Coach supporting and mentoring all teams. Hailing from Nova Scotia, Jeff played Jr. hockey in Nova Scotia and climbed the elite coaching ranks shortly after finishing his playing career. Jeff has Head Coaching experience at the U15AAA, U16AAA and U18AAA levels and advanced a program record number of players to Jr. A and Major Junior with the Valley Wildcats in Nova Scotia. In addition to his coaching resume, he is a Jr. A and Major Junior scout and his currently a High School teacher in Okotoks where is he putting his Education and Business Degree into use. Jeff has attended the High Performance 1 Coaching seminar as well as the Hockey Canada Skill Instructor Certification seminar which will both be put into play to support CNHA players.

 

 

 

Head Coach Colm McCabe

Colm is returning to the Northstars for his fifth year with the organization. After previously head-coaching U15 AA for three seasons, he was an assistant coach with the U15 AAA’s this past season.  Colm is extremely competitive and builds compete into all aspects of his team environment & practices. He also values team-building, camaraderie and development within his team’s culture which begins in his current career outside of hockey as a teacher. Colm is currently an assistant coach with Alberta Central Black as part of Alberta cup. He also leads and assists many of our organization’s off-season programs.

 

Assistant Coach Jordan Stimpson

‘Stimps’ returns back to the Calgary Northstars organization after previously being a head-coach for our U15 AA program. Jordan is the ultimate players coach and is passionate about the game of hockey. Jordan began coaching after a successful playing career which took him from the KIJHL to the ACAC with Portage College in which he graduated with a business administration and management diploma. Jordan has coaching experience at the CAC (Canadian College) level as well as at Team Alberta U16 Summer Camp, where he worked with some of the provinces top players. Beyond his playing experience, Jordan also serves as a coach with Global Sport Academy with many of their in-season and off-season groups. Jordan understands the game but even more-so his ability to connect with the players and help their development during the course of a season.

 

Assistant Coach Connor Rankin 

‘Ranks’ is the ultimate hockey man. After a five year career in the western hockey league in which he played for the Tri-City Americans & finished with the Calgary Hitmen — Connor played thirteen games in the ECHL before finishing his playing days with the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary where he graduated with an accounting degree. Connor currently co-owns PHD (Persistent Hockey Development) in Calgary and also works for the Calgary Flames as a video analyst in which he assists with their in-game analytics. Connor will be extremely valued in his role during the course of the season and will be someone our players can look up too for what it takes to compete at the ‘next level’.

 

Coach: Theo Zubot
Along with the Northstars, Theo is currently the goaltending coach for the Calgary Hitmen (WHL), and Red Deer Queens (ACAC). Coaching for the last 10 years, Theo has experience coaching elite levels of minor hockey, junior, pro and Canadian National level goaltenders. Theo’s experience, passion and energy has allowed him to continuously develop high end goaltenders and he looks forward to continuing with the Northstars organization.

 

 

Head Coach: Kelly Chesla
Returning for another season behind the U15AAA Northstar bench is Kelly Chesla. Kelly is very detailed, holds a high standard, and creates a culture that we are seeking within CNHA. Kelly has multi-year experience as a U15AAA Head Coach where he was named the AEHL (AMBHL) Coach of the Year in 2019. He also coached U16AAA and U15AA and U18AAA as an assistant. He has scouted in the NHL for the New York Islanders, was a video coach/coordinator in the NHL for the Calgary Flames and Video Coach for the Calgary Hitmen. Kelly also has previous work experience for Hockey Canada in a development role.

Assistant Coach: Braely Torris
Braely will be entering with 5th year in the AEHL coaching AAA hockey. He comes from a goaltending background where he played NCAA and Pro Hockey allowing him to see the game from a unique perspective and provide assistance to the team’s defensive skillset and tactics required to play as a connected unit. Braely also understands the value of being a great teammate and values the opportunity to teach young athletes how to be just that.

Assistant Coach: Zack Finlay
Zack started coaching in 2016 as an assistant coach at the U15 AA level. From 2016-2018 he moved on to the U18 AA level and progressed to being a head coach at the U15 AA level from 2018-2020. Before joining the Northstars in 2022/23, Zack led his U16AA team to a very successful season as they finished the season off as the city champions. Zack has built a strong and positive player growth and development program. Most recently he worked with CNHA as the Head Coach for U15AA Gold as well as a Team Alberta Peewee Prospect Assistant Coach. He is ready to take the next step in his coaching career and get behind a AAA bench.

Goalie Coach: Theo Zubot
